About WBSS
Our Aims are:
To enable members to enjoy the social and emotional benefits of singing in a group.
To perform music from a wide repertoire to our local community and beyond.
To encourage people from a range of ages to join with us in performing the music.
To support our local community by performing at local events and charities.
To organise regular and varied social events to enable choir members to get to know each other.
We do not hold auditions as we wish to draw in and support as many people as possible from our local community to join with us and enjoy singing. We perform to the highest standards possible and trust our members to attend rehearsals regularly, listen carefully to the Musical Director and each other. Other members of the choir will offer help and support. New members may find it confusing at first but if you persevere you will find your confidence grows as will your enjoyment. An ability to read music is not essential but will obviously help.
We are members of the National Association of Choirs - joining the nation in choral singing
We rehearse every Tuesday evening (during school term time) at the Methodist Church Hall
on Musters Road in West Bridgford from 7.45 to 9.45.
Rehearsals always start with a fun warm-up.
Music is provided and some pieces can also be purchased from the choir.
Rehearsing at home is encouraged by using recorded vocal tracks on our Google Drive.
Since returning to rehearsals following the lifting of COVID 19 restrictions we have been recording most of the rehearsals for those who can't attend and for any members wishing to brush up on their songs. These videos are on a private YouTube Channel.
We raise funds for charity, selecting 2 different charities each year
For 2023-24 the charities were:
Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance & Jessie’s Fund.
We will decide on next year's charities at our Annual General Meeting in September.
History
Social Singers started in 1992 at Jesse Gray Primary School, West Bridgford, Nottingham.
In the past 32 years it has developed into a thriving community mixed voice choir with around 80 members.
We usually have at least one visit a year to another city to collaborate and socialise with other choirs.
We have been to (among others) Trondheim in Norway , Gateshead and Whitley Bay, Liverpool, Kings Lynn, Blackpool and York. See the photo gallery.
For the last three years we have organised joint fundraising marathon events with Everyone Can Sing. Details of this year's event can be seen here.
